Art on the Concourse is Fordham Bedford’s community arts program and annual exhibition-fundraiser organized by Concourse House, Home for Women and Their Children, Fordham Bedford Community Services (FBCS) and Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation (FBHC). Founded in 1980 by community residents and activists at a time when the neighborhood and borough was in crisis, Fordham Bedford’s mission is to provide safe and affordable housing for families, single mothers, and seniors within the Northwest Bronx.
Today, Art on the Concourse is a conduit between local artists, residents and neighbors, showcasing public art within our community. In 2020, to mark the 40th anniversary of Fordham Bedford, we organized a neighborhood art walk, nurturing talented artists and fostering new intergenerational partnerships in the height of the pandemic. Since 2021, Concourse House Mother Artists (AKA Mothers Art Crew) have led our neighborhood public art program, taught art to communities across the Bronx, and helped to break through the stigmas surrounding homelessness in New York.
This book documents our award-winning public art projects from 2020-2024. Referencing public sculpture, crochet, weaving, beading, writing and songwriting, the book explores themes of peace, recovery, belonging and friendship.
The book takes shape as a neighborhood art walk with art installations located at Fordham Bedford’s primary locations, Concourse House, Refuge House, Serviam and West Farms. On route you will find crochet murals and texts, paintings and sneaker art along the exterior of our buildings, local bodegas, bus stops, subway stations, sidewalks and more.
